Goo Hara's brother has spoken out about their mother and her claim on the singer's inheritance. Goo Ho In revealed that their mother abandoned them when they were young. He felt betrayed when his mother claimed her "rights as a parent" after his sister died.
Korean singer Goo Hara passed away in November at age 28 due to possible suicide. Now, her brother is in a legal battle against their mother over her inheritance.
The singer's brother, Goo Ho In, filed a lawsuit against their mother for claiming that Hara's direct ancestors should receive 50 percent of her inheritance. The singer has been known to own a lot of Hara was known to real estate properties.
According to Soompi, the Civil Act of South Korea states that in the case of the death of an adult without children, their mother or father has a right to their inheritance even if they didn't personally raise them. But Goo Hara's father rejected the claims made by his wife.
A representative of Hara's father said his wife had left home when their two children were still young. He worked in construction sites across the country to make money to support his two kids. Hara and Ho In were taken care of by their grandmother when he was away working.
This made Mr. Goo gave up his own 50 percent share of the inheritance to Hara's brother. The singer's father felt sorry for his children because he failed to play his role as a parent to them and he spent too much time working.
Apparently, their mother gave up her parental rights and custody in 2006. Two years later, Hara debuted as a member of KARA.
However, their mother showed up at Hara's funeral and insisted on her "rights as a parent" and to appear as the family's chief mourner. The family stopped her from doing that. They, later on, found out that his mother hired lawyers to go after Hara's inheritance and he felt betrayed by it.
In the lawsuit filed by Hara's brother, he cited the Article 1008-2 (Contributory Portion) of the Civil Act, which aims for fairness between co-inheritors. It states that among direct ancestors, importance must be given to someone who particularly provided for the descendant or contributed to the maintenance and increase of their property.
Hara's brother reiterated that it was their father who provided for him and Hara and he also actively helped the singer as her guardian after her debut. Their mother, on the other hand, left home and cut off contact with them when they were still in elementary school. According to SBS FunE, during this time, Ho In and Hara learned to defend each other's care and affection.
Dispatch and SBS FunE have published photos of what is described as a diary entry, believed to have been written by Goo Hara in 2016. She wrote about how she was struggling without a mother and how much she longs for love, attention, and warmth.
